Those
of you who live in rural areas must always welcome the sound
of geese heading north to their nesting grounds. When I
see and hear them, I am really pleased that spring has finally
arrived and we can expect a beautiful time of the year.
We can look forward to sprucing up our yards, fixing up
our homes, planting our gardens watching and nurturing them
and eventually harvesting. We visualize picnics, golf, baseball,
swimming and a lot of fun and interesting things to do.
The geese are also a good omen to us in
that they remind is why they fly in a 'V' formation. Science
has found that as each bird flaps its wings, it creates
an uplift for the bird immediately following. By flying
in a 'V' formation, the whole flock adds at least 71% greater
flying range than if each bird flew in its own.
During the initiation of Impac, we are
working on the same principle as the geese. When we share
common goals, when we all work together in focus, we are
assured of quicker goal achievement, an easier, more compatible
and satisfying journey.
If we were like the geese flying 15,000
to 20,000 feet in the air, and if we tried to fly out of
formation, we would suddenly feel the drag of resistance
trying to go it alone and we would quickly get into formation
to take advantage of the lifting power of the bird immediately
in front. There is no doubt that it's easier, more effective,
more satisfying to build and grow as a team. The geese are
great team players, when the lead goose gets tired, he rotates
back in the wing and another goose flies point. The geese
honk from behind to encourage those up front to keep up
their speed. Don't we do the same thing at a hockey game,
ball game or track meet, when we holler encouragement?
It's just too bad that we can't
talk or understand goose talk, because I believe they might
be the greatest management gurus in motivational and inspirational
psychology.
